Garbage

Secondary suites are provided with 26 bag tags annually and are allowed one (1) bag of garbage bi-weekly meeting the standards laid out above.  A residence with a secondary suite is permitted three (3) bags total: two (2) for primary residence and one (1) tagged bag for secondary suite.   

• Manufactured home parks, strata and apartment complexes with five or more units may opt out of the municipal service are then required to provide appropriate arrangements for private curbside collection of solid waste. 
• These users may opt-in to the Town's curbside collection of solid waste service if possible.  Any multi-unit property interested in opting in, must opt in entirely. 
• If, these users elect to opt-in, each unit will be treated as a single family home and the curbside collection of solid waste will be the same as for single family homes.

• Garbage/refuse is picked up bi-weekly.  Food waste and recycling will not be collected from commercial properties. 
• Commercial properties are provided with a total of 104 Refuse Collection Tags  on January 31^st for use during the following 12 month period.  
• Each tag permits commercial properties to put out one (1) regular sized black garbage bag (65cm x 83cm) with an approximate weight of 11.5 kg (25 lbs).  
• Garbage bags can be contained in a garbage container but each bag must have a tag affixed to it and the total weight of the container shall not exceed 23kg (50lbs).
• Commercial businesses (including industrial and institutional properties) have the option to opt-out of the Town's curbside collection of solid waste and disposal service provided that appropriate arrangements (proper bins and collection services) are in place.
• Extra bag tags are available for purchase at Town Hall. 

• Each extra bag tag permits you to place one regular sized black garbage bag 65 x 83 cm) on the curb in addition to what is permitted.  
• All extra bags are required to have a bag tag affixed to the plastic bag (even if in a container) and be visible to the collector. Do not affix the extra bag tag to your garbage container. 

No, only one container or 2 regular sized black garbage bags (65cm x 83cm) will be picked up each garbage collection day. If you have an extra waste bag(s) to pick-up on your next garbage collection day, each bag will require an extra bag tag. These tags can be purchased at Town Hall for $2 each. If you can’t wait until your next collection day, you can take your garbage to the Creston Landfill (1501 Mallory Road) for $3.75 per 120L container.

Yes, your garbage must be securely tied in a plastic bag (65cm x 83cm or smaller) even if it's placed in a container. Any loose garbage (sweepings, ash, shavings, large items etc.) will not be accepted as it is hazardous to the collection staff.

• No, you do not have to put your garbage bag inside of a garbage can at the curb.
• If you don’t place your garbage in a container, up to 2 regular sized black garbage bags (65cm x 83cm) weighting approx. 11.5kg (25 lbs) each, will be collected.
• Placing garbage volumes in excess of 120L and/or with combined weights greater than 23kg (50 lbs) may result in your garbage not being collected.
• If your garbage is not in a container, the use of plastic bags smaller than 65cm x 83cm is discouraged. It is okay to use a bag smaller than 65cm x 83cm but remember, a maximum of 2 bags will be collected– regardless of size!
• If you choose to use a garbage can to protect your garbage from wildlife or weather, it must be durable, not corrosive, and fitted with handles and a lid.

Most of the “smelly” items such as meat scraps and dairy will now go in your Green Bin that will be collected every week.
