COVID-19 Update - August 21, 2020

Creston, BC – August 21, 2020: Creston Residents, on behalf of Town Council and staff, thank you for your continued vigilance and commitment to following Dr. Bonnie Henry’s Orders. COVID-19 has changed our lives in many ways and while we speak about physical distancing and hand washing, we have to remember the importance of connection and fun. To help you celebrate, connect and enjoy the summer safely, please refer to Dr. Bonnie Henry’s Good Times Guide. Further, a reminder from Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, and Dr. Réka Gustafson, B.C.’s deputy Provincial Health Officer, that “COVID-19 prevention looks different in different places. In public, around people we do not know, we focus on giving people more space. In workplaces and classrooms where we interact with people we know, keeping our groups smaller, staying home when sick and reducing very close face-to-face contact is the goal.” Thank you again Creston for all your hard work.

Extend a COVID-19 Temporary Layoff with a Variance: Employers and Workers who need to extend a temporary layoff due to COVID-19 have until August 25, 2020 to apply for a variance. To avoid permanent layoffs, apply before August 25, 2020.  For more information visit: www.gov.bc.ca/covidlayoffs.

Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) and Employment Insurance:  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, and the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough, announced changes to the Employment Insurance (EI) program and new income support benefits that will better support all Canadians on August 20, 2020. They also announced that in preparation for this transition and to ensure support continues for Canadians whose employment has been impacted by the pandemic, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) will be extended by an additional four weeks to a maximum of 28 weeks. This means that for the many Canadians expecting to exhaust their CERB benefits at the end of August, they will now be able to access an additional month of support.
