[ARCHIVED] COVID-19 Update - March 19, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Creston BC, March 19, 2020 - The Town of Creston is adapting to a rapidly changing environment. We have been focusing on providing our residents with accurate sources of information and prioritizing the health and safety of our staff and residents. We know that these are uncertain and challenging times for many. New developments emerge hourly; but, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the overwhelmingly positive response from our community.

The resiliency and ingenuity we are seeing from our community members is incredible. In the face of panic buying, our local grocery stores implemented specific hours to allow vulnerable community members to shop as well as establishing purchasing limits on essential goods. Restaurants are moving to take out and delivery models to follow the recommendations from the Provincial Medical Health Officer. Retailers are shifting to online and delivery services where possible. Volunteers are emerging to offer support shopping for those who can’t. Individuals are voluntarily self-isolating to reduce the spread of the virus, taking their role in the prevention of COVID-19 seriously.

“With each development, Creston is stepping up and adapting. I am very proud of our residents as we work together to support each other.” Mayor Toyota said, “Businesses are working hard to keep their doors open. Order take-out, shop locally, we need our businesses to survive this and they can only do that through our support.”

“The Town of Creston is deeply appreciative of the staff at Interior Health, our hospital, clinics, and long-term care facilities, for everything you are doing to keep our most vulnerable safe. We would also like to thank our Public Works Staff, Administrative Staff, and Creston Fire & Rescue, for your dedication and professionalism during these unprecedented times” says Mike Moore, Chief Administrative Officer.

Yesterday, the Town announced the closure of all Town-owned indoor facilities to the public, including Town Hall. Town Staff are still available by phone or email to assist our residents, so please be in touch if you need anything or have any questions. Please note, that all upcoming Regular Council Meetings and Committee of the Whole Meetings are cancelled until further notice. Staff are developing alternate ways to conduct Council Meetings for necessary Town business and decisions regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Toyota encourages everyone to “take this time to call neighbours, video chat with friends, and connect while maintaining social distance” He notes that, “Town parks are still open to the general public to enjoy; however, we ask that you listen to the recommendations from the Provincial Medical Health Officer when visiting these areas.”

The Town will continue to update our website (www.creston.ca) and our Facebook with current information regarding COVID-19. Thank you all for your understanding and cooperation it doesn’t go unnoticed.
