Curbside Garbage, Organics and Recycling Program

Curbside 2Town of Creston Curbside Garbage Organics and Recycling Program Development

The Town of Creston is working to expand our curbside collection program to incorporate residential organics and recyclables in addition to household garbage.  Creston has been an active participant in the development of Regional District of Central Kootenay’s (RDCK)  Organic Waste Diversion Strategy, which calls for the removal of food waste from landfills. In January 2020, the Province announced that the RDCK was successful in its application to the Organics Infrastructure Program for funding to construct two composting facilities. It is anticipated the Creston facility will be ready to receive organic material in the Fall of 2021.

On March 24, 2020 the Town received a formal offer from Recycle BC, the stewardship organization responsible for residential packaging and paper product recycling to join their program. As a collection partner, the Town would be responsible for providing recycling containers to all residents and for performing curbside collection services to households.

Currently, we are in the initial stages of designing an expanded curbside collection program that reflects the needs of our community. Considerations foundational to the design of this program include: cost, convenience for residents and administration, sustainability and effectiveness. Input from our citizens is essential to this process as we work through the Who, What, When and How of this program, following a Council decision to enter into an agreement with Recycle BC.

Community Engagement:

Community engagement is anticipated in the coming months and opportunities to participate will be announced on our website and social media. In the meantime, for more information we encourage you to review the resource documents presented to Council at the July 21, 2020 Committee of the Whole Meeting.
